Ultrasonic Scaling and Polishing

About Dental Cleaning

Teeth cleaning is a part of oral hygiene and involves removal of deposits (plaque/stains/tartar) to ensure good health of gums.

Teeth cleaning in dental terms is called ultrasonic scaling and polishing.

What is scaling and polishing?

Scaling is a basic dental procedure which involves cleaning of the teeth by removing plaque, stains or tartar. The process involves use of ultrasonic vibrating tip with some splash of water to remove the deposits around the gum line. Once the oral cavity is completely tartar-free, the dentist brushes the teeth with a high powered electrical brush along with a polishing paste.

This process is a great way to get rid of any stains left behind after the scaling process.

Why is scaling done?

Plaque is one of the major reasons of gum diseases. If left intact on the tooth surface, plaque hardens as it come in contact with saliva to form tartar (calculus).

Hence dental cleaning is required twice a year for removal of tartar and stains. Depending upon the amount of deposits that a person has, the dentist advices if a basic dental cleaning or a deep dental cleaning is required.

What is the difference between Basic and Deep dental cleaning?

If the deposits are superficially present then a basic dental cleaning every 6 months is good to keep the gums healthy.
Deep dental cleaning is recommended in either of the following cases:

  • If the patient has not done basic dental cleaning for a very long time resulting in more amount of deposits.
  • If the patient is suffering from some moderate to severe gum disease.
  • In case of localized swelling of the gums.
